... out of wherever inspiration springs from, sprang this title: PACIFIC MAPS AND FICTION(S) ... I wanted to give, or should I say, the title wanted two meanings: Fiction as a branch of literature concerned with stories/novels/romances; and Fictions as things invented and imagined by 'untrue', false, not true of the realities of a place, a people, and so on. It is through fiction that we create a lot of fictions and maps. Later I also had to puzzle out why the title had S in MAPS. (A map being a representation of the earth's surface or a part of it, something to read a place by, and find directions with.) I decided it was because I needed to talk about the Pacific as having many maps. Not just geographical/political ones, but maps of the moa (centre), the heart, imagination, agaga; cultural, artistic, literary/language, spiritual, philosophical, cinematic, mythological, dream, emotional maps; maps emerging out of the Pacific, maps brought in and imposed, maps combining the two, maps which are deliberate erasures and replacements; maps which reveal the rivers, mountains and geography of a people's agaga/psyche; maps used to perpetuate tictions/myths about ourselves; new maps, new fusions and interweavings, outer maps which reflect inner maps and configurations; maps which are the total of our cultural baggage, and in which we are imprisoned.
